The term identical twins is scientific, referring to a split egg resulting in two babies with the same DNA, as in the case with me and my sister. In culture, identical twins are often displayed as two halves of the same personality who dress the same, act the same, and are the same. When my family discovered boxes of family photos dating from the 1890s to the 1990s in my grandmothers garage, we immediately looked for the similarities between my living relatives and ancestors, attempting to use genetics to explain how we behave today. I realized that this is the same way people examine identical twins and wanted to create a work of art that challenges the conformity of traditional family albums through a multi-generational, twin-focused lens. In my series, I show the individuality of identical twins by comparing them to old family photos of my relatives, demonstrating the power yet limits of DNA in shaping personality and relationships. The side-by-side comparisons explore which traits my sister and I have inherited, have in common, or are entirely our own.
