I love weird, scary, unusual art, things that make you feel uneasy really spark my interest. This piece was born out of a collage assignment, it’s a translation of a 2D collage I made with the prompt “only hair, 75% negative space.” With the 2D collage I took the negative space literally, leaving a lot of blank paper and cut out pieces, but on the translation I decided to make the negative space the flesh and use the hair as the main focus. I used paper mache to make the armature, then I painted on melted wax in thin layers and pigmented it with fleshy tones until I got the colors I wanted in the right places, I then took a mix of my moms hair and mine and placed a couple hairs at a time onto the spine to slowly create the thin mane of hair. This sculpture to me means ugly love, sometimes like the love of a mother and child. It’s not always perfect but its beautiful and raw. I used my hair and my mothers to symbolize this specific relationship however it could be applied to any relationship. Loving people isn’t always easy or pretty but its tender, exposed, unembellished, raw.
