Acrylic on board I started my process by sketching digitally, then I transferred my concept onto a wood panel. I went on to render via acrylic paint, posca pen, and colored pencil. Finally, I sculpted 3d elements with plasticine clay to give the piece extra depth. My process was loose and non-linear. One moment I would be going in with acrylic, the next I would sculpt, and then I would return to the canvas with a completely new medium. I think this looseness greatly enhanced the piece’s free and dreamlike feel. Conceptually, My painting deals with the idea of self, shadow, and repression. The contrast of bright, colorful, stylized imagery and introspective, darker themes is something I love to see in the media I consume, and I thought it would be fitting for this piece. The shadow is a side of yourself others rarely see, sometimes it’s buried so deep you don’t even realize it yourself. My piece is about the guilt and loneliness some people feel, for reasons oftentimes not even understood by themselves. Whether it be negative personality traits you aren’t aware of, an unrealized part of your identity, or impactful adverse experiences buried within the depths of your mind. All of us repress parts of ourselves in some way, no matter how you try to run from it or brush it aside, it’ll always be there, festering under the surface.
