UP in ARMS
REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS IN A POST-ROE WORLD
Nearly 50 years since Roe v. Wade, abortion rights are threatened as never before. A leaked draft Supreme Court opinion on Mississippi’s 15 week abortion ban suggests that the foundational law protecting women’s reproductive freedom is likely to be overturned. Dozens of states have passed laws in the past few years restricting abortion rights, despite consistent evidence that a majority of the American public supports upholding Roe v. Wade.
The conversation around abortion rights has shifted over the decades from ‘a women’s right to choose’ to a broader recognition that abortion needs to be normalized as health care and access to abortion is a reproductive justice right whose restriction disproportionately affects women of color.
The Drawing Room ANNEX at 780 Valencia St. is asking Bay Area artists to submit works that address the threats to reproductive rights in our country and globally, in an effort to make our voices heard and mobilize calls to action. All forms of media will be considered and all submissions will be accepted in keeping with the mission of The Drawing Room Annex to be a community art space that supports the broadest segment of artists possible.
“UP in ARMS” will take place concurrently with the LAND exhibit, another open call for art, in a separate portion of the 780 Valencia space.
The exhibit is co-hosted by the Abortion Rights Mobilization and Support (ARMS) network, a Bay Area-founded community of individuals committed to mobilizing resources to increase women's access to abortion, particularly in areas where recent legislation has curtailed women's rights.
